Tenterden Railway and Bodian Castle

This will be the first of a few collections from Kent, we had a lovely weeks holiday there over the Easter period and had a great time. We had never been to Kent for any length of time but there was plenty to do to keep us busy. Infact we could of done with another week there to see alot more.

This collection is of The Kent and East Sussex railway which runs from Tenterden to Bodiam and there are photos of Bodiam Castle which is a short walk from the station.

No 23

This loco was built by Hunslet after the war for the Army in 1952, it was stored at Longmoor Military railway in Hampshire and entered service in Bicester in 1956. It was sold out of the Army in the early 1970's and during its military career covered 23,178 miles.

We didn't ride behind this loco but as it was stored locally to us in the 50's we needed a photo...

Terrier 32678 Loco

Terrier 32678 Loco

This loco was built by London Brighton South Coast Railway in 1880. It first worked on the London suburban lines and then moved to Portsmouth in 1890's. It worked the Hayling Island and East Southsea branch lines then in 1929 it move across the water to The Isle of Wight where it stayed until May 1936. It then had an overhaul, upon completion it returned to Fratton for duty on the Haying Island line once again.

For more information on this loco visit the Kent and East Sussex Railway website where they have some very informative reading for all their rolling stock.

Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle

This is a photo of Bodiam castle which I took from the station on The Kent and East Sussex Railway. You can park your car in the castle grounds and then walk to the station and take a ride on the steam trains.

Castles and steam trains.... for us the perfect day out.

Bodiam Castle and moat

Bodiam Castle and moat

This is Bodiam castle from the back which does look like it is just floating on the water of the moat. The castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge who was a former Knight of Edward III. It's now owned by the National Trust.
The front of the Bodiam Castle

The front of the Bodiam Castle

It was a lovely place to spend some time, but sadly we ran out of time to have a look inside. Maybe next time!!
Bodiam village

Bodiam village

This is Bodiam village from the railway station, the castle sits just to the right of the village. If we had had more time a look round the village would have been good.
The Oast House

The Oast House

This is the beautiful oast house we had hired for our weeks holiday in Kent and it was lovely.
The Ashford tank

The Ashford tank

We had been told that there was a WW1 tank in the middle of Ashford town centre and there was.

It's a mark IV WW1 tank built in 1916, it's believed this tank had never seen active service and was presented to the town on 1st Aug 1919.

The family looking at the tank

In 1929 the back of the tank was removed as well as all the mechanical workings from inside, they then installed a electricity sub station inside the tank. Of the 1220 that were built this is 1 of only 8 that survive, it is also a registered war memorial.
