Harvesting the old fashion way
This set of photos were taken at Harvesting the old fashion way held at West Stoke, Lavant. Near chichester in West Sussex.
This was the first year this event had been held on this site, usually being held in the small village of Heyshott a few miles up the road. With lots of tractors, binders and combine harvesters there was plenty to see. Everything on the site was done the old fashioned way for the weekend, cutting the crop, collecting the crop and then putting it through the threshing machine.
A wonderful weekend as always......
On the road again
I like this photo, this is the busy A272 road from Petersfield to Midhurst but here it looks as though no one was out today.
Victoria with her young crew
This is one of our boys and his friend who stayed with us for the weekend having a go.
Busy day ploughing
One of the fields is taken over completely by tractors ploughing, I think this is what you call follow on ploughing.
Time for a rest
There was also a couple of pairs of heavy horses ploughing, here after a busy morning it was time for a doze.
Beautiful boys
Now these two are called "Tommy" and "Major" and they are beautiful. They're welcome to come and live with me....
Victoria standing in the sun
The nice thing about this event is that it is held over 3 or 4 fields. So we can put Victoria in a quite corner of one of the fields and I can try and take some nice photos of her.
Tractors working hard
In one of the fields the crop of wheat is left and over the weekend the vintage tractors and balers take the challenge of "harvesting the old fashion way". It's a wonderful thing to watch, first they cut the crop with their tractor and binder (as seen here in the photo). Then it is collected by tractor and trailer, all being put on the trailer by hand or pitch fork. Then off to the threshing machine where it is thrashed and all the different parts of crop are ready to be used.
Tractor and trailer ride anyone
As the site is quite large they give tractor and trailer rides each day.
Some working while some watching
This event is always very busy, here you can see many people watching the tractor and men doing their job.
Coming home
Victoria on her way home, well nearly. After the harvesting weekend it was off to the Hollycombe Steam Collection in Liphook Hampshire for their steam rally weekend, but more about that in a couple of weeks.
Stop for a chat
The next three photos are black and white, I always find that events like this make good black and white photos.
All ages love their tractors
