Hardknott Pass, Ravenglass Railway and Wastwater
This week there are alot of pictures, I just couldn't pick out the best ones so I have put the lot on. Anyway there are some views, some of my family, the dog and then some narrow gauge locos..
Hope you like them.
HardKnott Pass
Sitting at the top of Hardknott pass which leads down into Wrynose pass both very steep climbs and then descends...
Looking down towards Wrynose pass
You can see the car snaking its way up the very steep climb and sharp corners.
Through the valley
Then on down through the valley along the windy road and the countryside around us was stunning.
And from where we came from
And where we are heading
Winding down into the Eskdale Valley
Nearly at the end of the climb and descend, both of these passes, Hardknott and Wrynose are 1289 feet and in world war 2 this area was used for tank training.
What a view
The Eskdale to Ravnglass Railway
This is the oldest surving railway in the Lake District and runs some 7 miles through some wonderful countryside.
This loco pictured above is called "River Mite" and was built in 1966 in York.
Loco "Northern Rock"
This was the loco that hauled our train on the 7 miles trip, this loco first saw service in 1976.
Loco "River Irt"
This is the oldest of the locos on the railway with "River Irt" being built in 1894 and moving to the Ravenglass railway in 1917.
Ravenglass Estuary
Looking out to sea, Ravenglass is the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park. As you leave the railway station you come out in a very pretty street with lots of well kept cottages and gardens. The main street is narrow at both ends as this was to help to keep the animals in when they were brought here to market.
Looking out over the estuary
The village sits along the estuaries of 3 rivers, The Esk, The Mite and The Irt which are on the edge of the Irish sea.
Our boys enjoying the waters edge
Jess enjoying the water
Jess in a river again!!
After our return journey back on the railway we had our lunch and here was the perfect river for Jess to have a swim in. She loved it as it was quite deep, deep enough for her to swim in and running quite fast. I wish I could show you the video of her here but sadly I can't do that but if you go to my
Steam and Country Facebook page you will find some video there.
The wonderful Wast Water
This is one of the best places in the Lake District, I love it here.
The lake is 3 miles long, 1/2 mile wide and 260 feet deep and is the deepest of the lakes in The Lake District.
What a view
Lloyd and Jess playing in the water
Its a very inviting lake to play in as you can see but on the opposite side of the lake its a very different story as it's covered in screes. They were quite a few people playing in the water and even some people out with their little boats.
Boys in the water
Harry and Jess
We spent quite a while here playing in the water but it was chilly even in August... But we had the best time...
The screes
This is the south-east side of the lake which is covered in screes and can you spot the helicopter in the picture?
